Fracking spurs a municipal mutiny in Pennsylvania

Philly.com// Philadelphia Inquirer -- By Ben Price Not content to leave Pennsylvania communities with any control over gas drilling within their borders, state legislators have stripped municipalities of their zoning authority under Act 13, choosing energy corporations over the people who elected them. This isn’t exactly new ground for the legislature; indeed, taking away communities’ authority to govern themselves is a decades-old pastime in Harrisburg, one that has shifted into high gear over the past 20 years.

The legislature made logging a guaranteed right in all zoning districts back in 1992, giving in to timber interests and eliminating municipalities’ authority to provide foconservation zones.

Shortly thereafter, lawmakers stripped municipalities of their authority to regulate corporate water extraction, the

Tea also states ""Note the careful CYA wording. "All chemicals ... EXCEPT"? EXCEPT? :0|" and "And, just in case you forgot, all chemical information before January 2011 is also "secret"".

Umm, no tea, that's incorrect and a misinformed opinion.

You are wrong on two counts. First, If you go into the site and look at the well listings you will find many that disclose the proprietary aka 'trade secret' chemicals listed, I have posted many of these, only the percentage is withheld to protect the driller from competitors stealing their percentage information. Second, as the link leads you, every chemical, even 'trade secret', must be labeled on the drill site with the chemical name and OSHA required MSDS sheets. This has alwaus been the case prior to the existence of the fracfocus website. All alleged 'loopholes' are closed, actually they are nonexistent.

But please, continue to explore the fracfocus website! It is full of factual information and disclosure you have been looking for.

And as always, when one seeks truth, the truth shall set you free! :=)

Good questions tea, glad you asked!

"Speaking of loopholes, how can you look up chemical properties and health problems?"

No loopholes there tea. Simply find the registered well, open the PDF file listing the chemicals used and tha CAS numbers are listed for each chemical. Then follow the links on this

Speaking of loopholes, how can you look up chemical properties and health problems?

When parts of these fracking formulas are classified as "trade secrets"? according to FracFocus - FAQ?

"What chemicals are being disclosed on this website?"

"All chemicals that would appear on a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that are used to hydraulically fracture a well except for those that can be kept proprietary based on the “Trade Secret” ‡ provisions related to MSDS found on the Trade Secret link at 1910.1200(i)(1). Read more... "

Note the careful CYA wording. "All chemicals ... EXCEPT"? EXCEPT? :0|

And, just in case you forgot, all chemical information before January 2011 is also "secret" ?

Another "FracFocus - FAQ"

"I know there are wells in my area that have been fractured, but when I search for them I get no results. Why?"

"The most likely reasons are that either the wells were fractured before January 1, 2011 or they have not yet been entered into the system. Only wells fractured after January 1st will be entered into the system and since the uploading of records began only recently it will take some time before a large number of wells is available."

Making fun of posters is sooo uncool.

Try discussing the issues raised ... not attacking the messenger!

Kindly remember anyone on GB has the right to their own opinion. That opinion does not need a citation to make it so, or to make it their opinion. In this case there is a citation! You need to learn to accept opposing opinions/comments without attacking, with ‘in your face rhetoric’ and/or making fun. That type of action tends to limit comments by posters to a thread, and does not enrich the discussion. In fact those remarks can turn a thread into a negative and churlish place to come for many Members.

Keep in mind….WWJD? Give Peace a Chance!

Aaaaaw, look who been up in the wee hours frantically looking up opinion pieces!

ROFLOL, more bait and switch from tea below, the only thing tea can find are opinion pieces, sorry tea, facts not opinion will win out.

Why does teafertwo go to the length of hiding who this Ben Parfitt is! I suspect it is this... He is part of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. What is their stated goal? Why it's social and economic justice! Surprise, surprise, Socialism!

Never let facts get in the way of a good Socialist agenda Tea.

Again when you find a fact based scientific report proving that water has been contaminated from hydraulic fracturing within the zone it is done, get back to us.

By the way, have you thanked the oil and gas industries for the life saving advances they have brought the world in medical supplies and so many other facets of everyday quality of life???

Gnusman53: Seems the GOP pols have amnesia........about smaller government... when they are in charge

Yep, the GOP only wants smaller government when it comes to corporations, but are much more oppressive when it comes to citizen rights. Remember forced transvaginal ultrasounds? And now this.

Fracking and shale cause grave concern

Hydraulic fracturing goes through water the way Simon Cowell goes through auditioning singers. Last year at B.C.'s Horn River Basin, "600 worth of Olympic pools of water were pressure pumped at just one multiwell site. There will be thousands such well sites developed if the industry is able to develop out the way it wants to," Parfitt told the audience.

The shale gas industry has a budget-busting thirst for energy, too. The one liquid natural gas facility approved for Kitimat involves a partnership between Encana, Apache Canada and EOG Resources. It will take eight per cent of all the power that is currently produced on our hydroelectric grid, says Parfitt.

"The premier and the energy minister have stated it as a goal having three such facilities in the province by 2020, and that translates into a quarter of all the hydroelectric power in our province by an industry that will be consuming more and more water-" Much of the natural gas will be directed to Alberta for the production of the energy-andwater-intensive Tar Sands.

Parfitt insists there's nothing carbon-neutral about shale gas operations. They're certainly not consumer-neutral. The demand for increased hydroelectricity production is coming from industry, yet residential rates are already much higher than industrial rates. In effect, British Columbians are subsidizing the oil and gas companies' hydro consumption.

While many Americans have been sleeping, watching TV and playing video games ? The BIG GREED corporations have been very busy. They have been "investing" in political favors, and putting legislation in place to allow them to plunder for profit. They have been enacting laws with built in loopholes designed to favor industry and neuter private citizen rights.

As one informed member, PDQBlues, so aptly put it:

"loopholes large enough to drive a fracking truck full of toxic chemicals through."

Amazing how Big Oil stockholders protest the most over a real news article here. Special interests seem to always get their way in PA at the expense of local rule!

Anyone calling this news article an opinion piece is a 'liar'.

I wonder what the 'fracking' will do to the stability of the bedrock. Increase the likelihood of earthquakes?

Not surprising. Most aspects of the American government has a total disconnect from doing the will of the American people. The gap will grow until the American people realize that a change of the professional politicians in office does not matter; at that time it will likely get very ugly in the country while the American people take back the country.

I still think local government would do a better job of controlling zoning & where they want to allow any kind of developments.

Local gov't is better than state, which is better than national. So I hope the local municipalities win this fight. Although I can't say I, personally, will be heartbroken if they don't. Continuing to vote for officials that do this is the fault of the people. And I can't lie and say I'm not a beneficiary of their state's benevolence towards corporations in a small way. I'm sure I use some of the products of their farm lands and I rather enjoy low priced natural gas. And since I don't live there, I don't have to worry about the mess. Although I'm not particularly sure I'd care even if there was local drilling. If they found gas or oil in my county, I think I'd welcome the development. Maybe Georgia would finally get a sizable refinery instead of having to import fuel and natgas over pipelines from gulf refineries.
