Interesting human story aspect to the high fuel prices, but not real informative. Everyone but insiders suffer from high commodity prices. But the alternative to commodity trading is control by the same people who gave us Social Security. They have to take it from you to give it back to you. Minus the cost of g'ment overhead.
I'll take my chances with the commodity brokers, thank you!

The Carni people are getting it from both ends. Higher fuel costs, and less people attending the fairs.

Increased fuel costs are reflected in virtually everything we buy or use. This presents a good opportunity to hone one's planning skills. Hopefully a culture of conservation will emerge.

Hard to believe that the cost of diesel affects that industry that much, but churches are cutting back on trips due to the cost of diesel to power the charter buses.

If you observe that most of the smaller traveling carnivals are using old fuel guzzlers it is not much of a suprise they are finding costs rising.

Carnies have always make their big bucks in the chance booths and the arcades. The rides have always been a loss leader.

Well I don't know about the other people on here, but here in Iowa, the traveling carnivals that we get at our local county fairs and local celebrations, were never that great to begin with. They had some pretty shady looking people, who were smoking, WHILE OPERATING the rides and were dressed in pretty dirty looking clothes. That combined with so-so rides, that looked rusted out and didn't look the safest was bad enough. But then to charge $2 PER RIDE for a minute or so ride?? No thanks! It didn't seem worth the money then and I cannot imagine with the gas prices going up, how much they might be charging now. I like the festivals and fairs for the food and the crafts and the kids games, but if I am going to pay for my kids to go on rides, I might as well drive to one of the closer amusement parks and pay for "quality" rides, that last longer and have cleanly dressed, non-smoking people running them.

Granted, rising diesel cost bite into everyone, and carnival people must make a living too...BUT...just like people who chose a career in driving truck, it is the career they chose. Carnivals are a "lux" commodity. How about food which is a necessity, among many other things... If you bought it a truck brought it! How can a truck driver not raise his price to deliver a load when he has to pay almost $5 a gallon for diesel. He can not drive less miles, or car pool. That hike in delivery goes to EVERY CONSUMER not only someone who wants to take the kids out for an afternoon. And the hike in prices is not small. I just went to a big name store to buy a case of brand x, the cost was $9.59, Six months ago for the same case I paid $4.58. It's not only one thing it is everything.

Yeah! Higher fuel prices are hurting everybody and the businesses too. Just like that story on the school districts and their bus fuel expenses, a while back. You either raise prices and people don't come OR stay closer to home and try to exist. What to do, What to do.....

There's a big county fair going on right now. I haven't been so don't know how it compares to other years, but the tv news talked about how attendance was up. Last year was much hotter at the start of this county's fairs so that probably has something to do with it.

SO, if you drive to the county fair to watch the pig races, the pigs won't be there because of high diesel costs???? Perhaps the carnival crews are roasting the pigs and staying home. How in the world will I ever get sold a hot tub??
